notes:
This is the last figure created by the great Danish porcelain artist Niels Nielsen before his death in 1921 for the porcelain manufactory Bing & Grøndahl, where Nielsen worked between 1915 and 1921.

Bing & Grøndahl was established in 1853 by the figure maker Frederik Vilhelm Grøndahl and two brothers who were art dealers, Herman and Jacob Herman Bing. Both the Royal Copenhagen porcelain manufactory (who now produces this piece) and Bing & Grøndahl produced underglazed painted porcelain pieces using a very soft, almost watercolor-like painting technique which became a hallmark of Danish porcelain.

Both companies flourished during the industrial age of the late 1800s as a newly rich bourgeoisie began spending their money on collectables. The companies were also advised several times during the 1899s to pool their resources and set up sales points in other parts of the world to guarantee an international position for Danish porcelain.

Royal Copenhagen merged with the Bing & Grøndahl manufactory in 1987. Many of the original porcelain pieces, such as the one shown here, were kept in production.
