Michele De Lucchi was born in 1951 in Ferrara, Italy, and studied architecture at Florence University, graduating in 1975. During the 1970s and 1980s, a period when radical and experimental architecture was occurring in Italy, he was an important figure in establishing design movements such as Gruppo Cavart, Studio Alchymia and Memphis Group.
De Lucchi was the Director of Design for Olivetti from 1992 to 2002, and he has developed many experimental projects for Compaq Computers, Philips, Siemens and Vitra. Architectural commissions for important corporate clients have been executed by De Lucchi throughout Europe and Asia: in Japan for NTT, in Germany for Deutsche Bank, in Switzerland for Novartis, and in Italy for Enel, Olivetti, Piaggio, Poste Italiane, ENEL’s, and Telecom Italia. Within all of these working environments, De Lucchi introduced technical and aesthetic innovations and made significant contributions to the overall evolution of the workplace.
In addition to these corporate projects, he has also designed interiors for Triennale di Milano Design Museum and the Groninger Museum in Groningen. His work has been shown in numerous art and design exhibitions throughout the world, and in 2003, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris acquired a considerable number of his works for their permanent collection.
De Lucchi has also received several honors and awards throughout his career: in 2000 he was made an Officer of the Italian Republic by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, for his contributions to design and architecture, in 2001 he was appointed as a Professor at the Design and Art Faculty at the University of Venice, in 2006 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Kingston University in London, and in 2008 he was nominated Professor at the Design Faculty of the Politecnico in Milan and Member of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome.
In 1990 he founded Produzione Privata, a small company through which Michele De Lucchi designs products using artisanal production techniques and materials. He currently works through his studio, aMDL, which has offices in Milan and Rome.
