The Tempietto

designer:
Timothy Richards

manufacturer:
Timothy Richards, UK

materials:
cast plaster

notes:
The Tempietto of San Pietro in Montorio is a small commemorative martyrium built by Donato Bramante, possibly as early as 1502, in the courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio, and is acknowledged a masterpiece of High Renaissance architecture.

The model is in sections: the base, lower drum and peristyle with metopes, each one detailed and correct. Inside the main frieze is a raised circular ceiling containing coffered sections with triglyph detail on the concave internal face. A series of plates further decorate the building. The grilled shaft, which on the real building allows light into the crypt, in the model is decorated inside with inscriptions and cherub faces. A series of small plates inscribed in Latin further decorate the building’s exterior.

Since 1988 Timothy Richards has been creating precise, exceptionally beautiful British Gypsum plaster architectural models from his workshop in Bath, England, incorporating etched brass, white metal, copper, hand-made glass, and gold, where required. Educated in Bath, Richards has received commissions for his finely crafted and detailed models from the Royal Opera House, The Victoria & Albert Museum, the Courtauld's Gallery, Harvard University, the US Department of State, the House of Commons, the Spanish Government, and members of the Royal British Family.
