This doll head was made by Huichol Indians using traditional Chaquira beading techniques, wherein very small colored beads are pressed into a layer of wax to create patterns.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Native North Americans have been beading for centuries, developing several schools of unique and often very colorful beadwork. In Latin America, beads are often used to create the very bold, distinctive designs associated with Mexican folk art. A hand beaded piece can take weeks to complete, requiring a great deal of focus and a steady hand on the part of the artisan.

Because it is made of wax, the Chaquira beaded doll heads should not be exposed to direct sunlight or heat. They also must be handled extremely carefully, as the beads can easily come off.
