The Austrian government generously agreed to present to the Opera House a gift of 350 crystal chandeliers, wall sconces, and other small fixtures, each chandelier visualized as a cluster of radiant stars. The chandeliers were intended to commemorate the Austrian people's gratitude to America for its help in reconstruction after World War II.
The original chandelier still hangs in the Opera House today and is surrounded by nine smaller chandeliers, of various sizes and similar to the example here.
