The birds and insects engraved on this decanter are designs originally created for a hand-painted Herend porcelain service commissioned by the Rothschild family around 1850.

The motifs portray birds playing with a necklace in the branches of a tree, following a 19th century tale of Baroness Rothschild who lost her pearl necklace in the garden of her Vienna residence; later it was discovered by a gardener that some birds had taken the Baroness's jewelry.
