Patrick Jouin

design year:
2006

manufacturer:
Materialise.MGX, Belgium

materials:
Polyamide (nylon), built through Selective Laser Sintering.

notes:
Jouin's 'One Shot' stool is made all at once; all of the hidden moving parts are created in one SLS print and the stool emerges from the printing machine complete.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a process of creating "rapid prototypes", allowing one to "print" three dimensional structures from a CAD computer model. The computer model is sliced into very thin layers, and each layer is created through the use of a laser which fuses together the chosen material, which is in a powder form. After each layer is hardened, it is lowered down one thickness and a new layer of the powdered material is rolled out to be traced on the surface. Upon completion, the physical model replicates the CAD computer model to the finest detail.

The stool is part of the collections of the MoMA, New York, and the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt design museum, New York.

This stool can be folded up or made into a stool by simply pulling or pushing the handle on the seat of the stool.
