This "room-within-a-room" is inspired by a traditional Dutch bedstee, or sleeping chamber, customarily built into an ancient wall cupboard, saving space, and helping to keep the occupant warm. The walls and cupboards of Jongerius’s Bedstee are loosely upholstered in one-off prototypes of Layers fabrics, developed over the past three years in collaboration with Maharam. Included is a soft sculpture of a candleholder which she originally created in clay as part of her Majolica series for Koninkliijke Tichelaar Makkum, 2005.
