Sommersi Bollicine
vase

designer:
Carlo Scarpa

design year:
1940

manufacturer:
Venini, Italy

materials:
mouth-blown red glass with gold leaf decoration

notes:
Produced in a numbered and limited edition of 49 pieces.

The "sommerso" technique represents a turning point in Venini's production, one which led to further exceptional developments and which was widely copied or elaborated by other manufacturers.

This technique was invented and developed by Carlo Scarpa, and the first examples were exhibited at the XLX Venice "Biennale D'Arte" in 1934. The technique consists of superimposing a number of layers of glass of differing consistency to create a considerable thickness - giving unusual effects in the way light is diffracted.

In Venini's production of "sommerso" glass, there is usually a layer of "bulicante" glass, formed of thousands of tiny air-bubbles covered by a strata of transparent glass. Sometimes, the two layers have extensive inclusions of gold leaf.

price:
$4,000.00
