This is a portrait of Eugène-Louis Napoléon, the only son of Napoléon III and his wife, the Empress Eugénie de Montijo. Having fled France in 1870 (when Eugène-Louis was 14 years old), the Imperial family settled in England. Upon the death of Napoléon III, the boy was proclaimed Napoléon IV by the Bonapartists. Joining the British Army, he volunteered for the expedition to Zululand, and was speared to death in Ulundi. Eugène-Louis was the last dynastic hope for the restoration of the Bonapartes to the throne of France.
