notes:
Jean Dominique-Vivant Denon was Minister of Arts under Emperor Napoléon I, and was the developer and first director of the Louvre Museum. In 1802, Denon was appointed General Director of the Imperial Museums, which included the Musée Central des Arts (later named the Musée Napoléon, and now known as the Louvre Museum), the Musée des Monuments Français, and the Musée de l’Ecole Française at Versailles. Denon’s main directive was to catalogue and incorporate all of the looted works the Emperor acquired on his campaigns into the Imperial museums. Even after the defeat of Napoléon, Denon refused to return the works of art to the countries from which they were stolen, and instead resigned his position. In his retirement, surrounded by his personal collection of more than 200 paintings and 520 Etruscan vases, he wrote his masterwork, Monuments des Arts, which was published posthumously by his nephews in 1829.
