Saint-Denis was the First Bishop of Paris. Having roused the ire of local pagans, he was imprisoned by the Roman Governor, subjected to torture, and ultimately, put to death at Montmarte ca. 258. Legend has it that his decapitated body carried his mitred, severed head some distance from his execution site.
