1794

Manufacture National de Sèvres, France

notes:
Depicted here is Joseph Bara, a young soldier who fought with the French Revolutionary troops against the Crown. Captured by the enemy at age 14, legend has it that Bara, given an opportunity to save his life, was ordered to cry out “Vive le Roi”; instead, he shouted “Vive la République”, and was executed. His eulogy was delivered by Maximilian Robespierre on May 7th, 1794. With great pageantry, his remains were transferred to the Pantheon, and he was subsequently celebrated as a martyr of the French Revolution. This effigy was created the year that he died.
