notes:
Pierre Dupont, poet and radical anti-Bonapartist lyricist, was born on the 23rd of April, 1821, in Lyons, the son of a blacksmith. Both parents having died before he was five, Dupont was brought up in the country by his godfather, a village Priest. He was educated at the seminary of L’Argentire, and was afterwards apprenticed to a notary in Lyons. Having no theoretical knowledge of music, Dupont nonetheless composed both the words and the melodies of his songs. Singing his own songs at the workman’s concerts in the Salle de la Fraternit du Saint-Denis, the public performance of his famous Le Pain was forbidden. In 1851, having become the unofficial “Poet Laureate” of the socialist movement, Dupont was exiled from France. The sentence having been cancelled, the poet withdrew for a time from politics. He died in Lyons on the 24th of July, 1870.
