Lazare Carnot, French revolutionary, was a brilliant military engineer, chiefly responsible for the majority of military successes during France’s Revolutionary Wars. A member of the Legislative Assembly, the Convention, and the Committee for Public Safety, his military knowledge was indispensable. Under Napoléon, he served as Minister of War, in those years writing several works on mathematics and military engineering. In 1810 he wrote his masterpiece, De la Défense des Places Fortes, long considered the classic work on fortification.
