Albert Lebrun was made President of the République following the assassination of President Paul Doumer in 1932. Re-elected in 1939, he exerted very little political power, and in 1940 was forced to accept the German terms of surrender. He fled, but was captured by the Germans in 1943. He was allowed to return later that year, but was kept under constant surveillance. In 1944, after the Allies restored the French Government, Leburn went into retirement. He died in Paris in 1950 of pneumonia.
