Ambroise Thomas was a recognized French composer, most noted for his operas Mignon (1866) and Hamlet (1868). Born in Metz in 1811 to a musician father, he was accepted into the Conservatoire de Paris in 1828, where, from 1856 until his death in 1896, he also taught.
