Les Visiteurs d’ Été:
Général Louis Lazare Hoche

designer:
Louis-Simon Boizot

design year:
1797

manufacturer:
Manufacture National de Sèvres, France

materials:
biscuit porcelain

notes:
Son of a groom in the Royal Stables at Versailles, Louis Lazare Hoche, born in 1768, entered the Army at the age of 16. During the early years of La République, he rose quickly through the military, establishing himself as France’s leading General in 1796. His chief rival, Napoléon Bonaparte, was beginning to make his mark in Italy at the time. Hoche was named Minister of War in 1797, but, finding himself surrounded by obscure political intrigues, he resigned. He died of consumption that same year.

Louis-Simon Boizot, who was Chief Artist at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres when this bust was made, had been asked to make several bas-relief sculptures of Hoche (some of which can be found at the Musèe de Versailles). This has lead historians come to conclude that this bust was created from these bas-reliefs, as opposed to a death mask of the General’s face.
