notes:
Félix Faure was President of France from 1895 until his death in 1899. Born in Paris in 1841, the son of a furniture maker, he acquired considerable wealth as a merchant, and was elected to the National Assembly in 1881. From there he held several political positions, obtaining Cabinet rank as Ministre de la Marine in 1894. (This position, Minister of the Marine, was previously called the Secretary of State, and entrusted the control of the French Navy.) Faure was unexpectedly elected President after the resignation of President Casimir-Périer.

Faure’s latter days of Presidency were embittered by the Dreyfus Affair, a controversy which began in 1894, with the discovery of secret French documents which had been leaked to the German Embassy. At a critical moment during the subsequent court proceedings, on February 16th, 1899, Faure died suddenly from apoplexy.
