Jean Lannes volunteered for the French army in 1792, and was elevated to Chef de Brigade through his excellent service. Due to an army reform, he was subsequently stripped of his rank, and he re-enlisted as a simple volunteer. He again fought his way up the ranks of the army, joining Napoléon Bonaparte in 1795, and was made a Général de Brigade by Bonaparte in 1798.

In Egypt, Lannes battled Bonaparte’s campaigns in Alexandria and Rosetta, crushing the Cairo uprising and returning with Bonaparte to France. There, he assisted in the Coup de Brumaire, when Bonaparte overthrew the French government Directory, replacing it with his Consulate, marking the beginning of the Napoleonic Empire. Lannes was appointed General of Division and Commandant of the Consular Guard.

Lannes commanded the advanced guard in the crossing of the Alps in 1800, and was instrumental in winning the battle of Montebello, from which he took his title, Duc de Montebello.
