Louis-Simon Boizot, born in Paris in 1743, was the son of Antoine Boizot, a designer for the “Manufacture des Gobelins”, the royal tapestry and furniture works in Paris.

Boizot entered the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture at the age of 16, and after winning medals for his work, proceeded to study for three years at the “l’École Royale des Élèves Protégés” (Royal School of Protégé Students), which was under the direction of the Flemish painter Carle Van Loo at the time. Boizot then went to live in Rome for four years, having received a boarding placement there at the Academie de France.

Boizot returned to France in 1770, married Marguerite Virginie Guibert, (daughter of the sculptor Honoré Guibert) and in 1772, had a son. He was named Chief Artist of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1773, and remained in this position until 1800, collaborating with many artists. In 1792, he was made a member of the Commission des Monuments, a parliament-run commission dedicated to the preservation of historical monuments. In 1805, Boizot became a professor at the renowned École des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he remained until his death in 1809.

Louis-Simon Boizot was an advocate of the French Revolution. This bust of Marie-Antoinette was made in 1789, at the beginning of the tumultuous uprising against the Royalty. The Queen was only 34 years old.
