Anna Pavlova, the brilliant Russian ballerina, entered the Imperial Ballet School of St. Petersburg at the age of 11. Recognized by teachers and critics as an incredibly gifted dancer, upon her graduation she was immediately accepted into the Imperial Ballet. She began touring abroad, making her American debut in 1910 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

“La Mort du Cygne” (The Death of the Swan), a ballet created for Pavlova in 1905 by the Russian dancer and choreographer Mikhail Fokine, was one of her most celebrated dances, and she performed this piece repeatedly during her career. This bust depicts her in costume, with swan feathers around her face and neck.
