Agathon Léonard, born in 1841 in France, was best known for his Art Nouveau sculptures, most notably his “La Danse de l’Éscharpe” (the Scarf Dance) centerpiece of 1899-1900, which was made famous in the World Fair of 1900, at the “Pavillion de Sèvres”.

“La Paysanne” was inspired by the imagery of the chaste and pure country-women that many French artists portrayed near the beginning of the 20th century. It is the second bust that Léonard created for Sèvres.
