notes:
In civilization, man is surrounded on all sides, indoors and outdoors, by a deep, rarely noticed conflict between two ancient ways of shaping things: the right angled and the round. Wherever one looks, there are hordes of squares and circles and their preferred shapes: the rectangle and the ellipse.

The Danish poet and inventor Piet Hein asked himself a fascinating question: what is the simplest and most beautiful curve that mediates between these two conflicting tendencies? Piet Hein arrived at the formula for a figure which he called the Superellipse.
