In 1954, immediately after returning from Japan, Isamu Noguchi presented the design for a Rocking Stool to furniture producer Hans Knoll. In design terms, the stool evokes the dumbbell-shape of African stools.The slightly curved seat and base were turned in teak or walnut, then waxed; the joints are composed of chromed steel rods slanted diagonally to form a central, round foot, paying tribute to wire artist and furniture designer Harry Bertoia.
