notes:
Shiro Kuramata, (1934-1991) made a major impact on the furniture and interior design community, designing several pieces that have come to now be known as classics. Among these pieces are the 1986 How High the Moon steel and nickel mesh chair, the 1989 Miss Blanche chair in acrylic Plexiglas with plastic roses, and the 1970 Furniture in Irregular Forms, just to name a few.
He designed more than 300 boutiques and restaurants, including the San-Ai Co design atelier of the Matsuya department store, several Issey Miyake clothing boutiques around the world, the Lucchino Bar and Caffe Oyx. During the years 1981-1983, Kuramata worked with the Memphis group and its leader Ettore Sottsass, where he designed the "Nara" table utilizing a new material he developed and termed "star piece" terrazzo, where he mixed pieces of colored glass into cement. The material became a hallmark of his oeuvre, and was used in both his furniture and interiors.
