Masanori Umeda was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1941. He graduated from Kuwazawa Design School and in 1966 moved to Italy upon where he began working in the Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni Studio until 1969.

Ettore Sottsass was born in Innsbruck, Austria in 1917. He received his degree in Architecture from the Turin Polytechnic Institute in 1939. In 1947 he opened a studio in Milan specializing in both architecture and design.
