The dragon is a very old and typical Chinese symbol. It came into use during the Chinese Han-Dynasty (794 BC - 1148 AD) and was reserved for the Emperor and his princes only. In Chinese porcelain painting, the dragon is usually combined with clouds and waves to express its rule over Heaven and Earth.
