Michele de Lucchi, born 1951, studied architecture and became involved in radical and theoretical architecture movements, founding the group Cavart in 1973. In 1978 he met Ettore Sottsass in Milan and with him created the first Memphis exhibition (1981).

De Lucchi contributed several pieces to the Memphis collection including his famous "First Chair" from 1983. Since 1979 he has been a design consultant with Olivetti and since 1992 he is design chief for all of Olivetti’s office products and office systems.
