Robber Baron, the complete Suite
tales of power, corruption, art and industry, cast in bronze

In May 2007, Moss previewed the Cabinet—the first fully realized piece from the Suite of five elements which comprise Studio Job’s ambitious masterwork, Robber Baron. The four additional pieces—Jewel Safe, Table, Standing Lamp and Mantle Clock—at the time as yet unrealized, were presented as drawings. One year later, we are proud to present Robber Baron, the complete Suite.

Pyramids of Makkum

Commissioned by the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, to repair their late 17th century Delft flower pyramid—an exuberant, monumental multiple layer flower vase created in response to Europe’s “tulip mania”—Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the renowned 16th century Dutch manufactory, spent years researching the long-lost techniques necessary to recreate such a massive and complex composition.

Inspired by that research, Managing Director Jan Tichelaar commissioned four Dutch artists (Hella Jongerius, Studio Job, Jurgen Bey and Alexander van Slobbe) to create contemporary flower pyramids, thereby adding to the noble lineage of this ancient object as well as this ancient manufactory.

ephemeral constructions by Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny

Through this Rotterdam-basded Slovakian designer’s ingenious intervention, a colony of over 40,000 bees created Libertiny’s remarkable classically-shaped Honeycomb vase. In contrast, his monumental Amphora was cast from seven different qualities of beeswax. Like treasures exhibted in a 17th century noble Wunderkammer (Cabinet of Wonders) these contemproary artifacts are an exceptional synthesis of nature, science, mathematics and art.
