Many of the artist-designers represented by Moss are available for private commissions. Several have already created important works for private collectors, both residential as well as for commercial and public institutions. By engaging with a specific context, an artist works in direct dialogue with the vision of the patron, and the results are a fundamental extension of the artist's prior work. Moss is experienced in facilitating, mediating and managing this always extraordinary process.
The original 25 pieces for the 2005 "Where There's Smoke..." exhibition at Moss New York were commissioned works by the gallery, and numerous private and public commissions for work from the series has followed, especially for museums, including the Groninger Museum and the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands. He has worked on corporate commissions as well, including Ian Schrager's Gramercy Park Hotel and the Groninger Museum restaurant.
The brothers created and installed a "Favela Wall Mural", the permanent east wall of the Moss Gallery in 2005. This large piece was inspired by their Favela chair, as was a Favela Tree Sculpture they created for Moss and a Corallo Tree Sculpture, similarly inspired by their Corallo chair for Edra. The brothers have done commissioned work for several museums, including the V&A in London and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.
Due to the nature of Jongstra's work many of her pieces are commissioned. Those works include installations, tapestries and wall coverings, rugs, and bedcovers. Henket, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Dutch Embassy Berlin with architect Rem Koolhaas (collaboration with artist Marc Mulders), Kunsthal Rotterdam with architect Rem Koolhaas, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York, with TWBT Architects.
Emerging UK designer, Peter has recentlycompleted a commission for a large table to seat over 40 people at a private home in the United States. The table is based on his recent body of work called the "Palindrome Series", a collection of symmetrical pieces of furniture, each comprised of half mould and half cast. The forms, textures and details of one side are mirrored on the other. The wood is first assembled as a mold and the composite casting material is layered inside. Once the casting material is set, the wooden mold is disassembled, turned inside out and reassembled to form the opposing side. The two sides, mold and cast, are then joined together using mould-making fasteners.
